For this assignment, choose a photo of anything that you want to make a stencil out of using Photoshop or some other editing software. Using your software, remove the color and make the image appear to be a stencil instead of an actual photo. Take notice of how this changes the focus of the image.
I came up with this assignment because I think it is a good way to demonstrate the simplicity of a photo. Many photos today are all about the color or the details, but this takes away from all the minor details and the color, causing you to only focus on the outline of the image. It provides a different perspective to examine a photograph.
I chose a picture of my sister that I had saved on my computer from her senior pictures. Photographers always make you do “serious” faces and she had to do a lot of these in her session, but a lot of them made her look funny and gave us all a good laugh! This is the original of one of the few serious ones that we all loved, which is why I chose it:
It has a lot of color and detail to it so I figured it would work well as a stencil to demonstrate the foundation of the photo. The stenciled version emphasizes her facial features rather than her clothes or any other details.
